Warhammer: Strike Cruiser by mikkow Warhammer: Strike Cruiser by mikkow
A commission for Sabertooth Games' Warhammer 40,000 Collectible Card Game "Dark Millenium".

It portrays a Blood Ravens (Space Marine) Strike Cruiser in orbit. Surrounded by a few Destroyers as escorts. The Blood Ravens were the main chapter featured in the Real Time Strategy game "Dawn of War".

Background done in Painter IX. Everything else in Photoshop CS. Approximately 8 hours thus far. Expect an update on this as I need to perhaps polish or change something depending on what the art director thinks. Meanwhile, hope it's enjoyable.

This is the most evil painting I've done in modern times. The shape.. of those.. cruisers.. :frustrated: I want to kill myself just thinking about how many hundreds of shapes that are close packed in no logical design language. Because there were almost no research material on this that would let me figure out how it looked like from different angles, I was left referencing a picture of a miniature (for the shape only, and not entirely either). The designer of these ships need to be spanked publically :P

Copyright 2005 Games Workshop.

Don't know what Warhammer 40,000 is about? Check out this [link] introductionary article, it's a fascinating read.

Edit: Lengthened the ship. Reconsidered what parts should be white. Added glow-like reflections of the light in the front part of the ship (I love that effect). Repainted the white at the rear and added details to it. Some sharpening here and there.

Edit 2: Changed the colour of the planetoid to be more purple (from blue earth like). Fixed some perspective issues on the cruiser. Added some minor wear and tear and shading fixes. Removed one of the closer destroyer escorts.

Haha haven't been able to find many pictures of cruiser ships of the blood ravens either than that of taking screenshots of the ending cutscene of Dawn of War II. Very nicely done though.

So which Strike Cruiser is this, the Armageddon?

The Armageddon was a battle-barge and was destroyed in orbit of the planet Typhon Primaris during the Tyrannic invasion in the First Aurellian Crusade.

The space marine ships are very cool, but their design could be better. I mean they had many millenium to get a more efficient design and yet they haven't.

Problem is, if anyone in the Age of the Imperium tried to change the design, they'd either be unable to understand how to do it, get shot for heresy by the Mechanicus, get burned at the stake for heresy by the Inquisition, or get shot for heresy by the Ecclesiarchy.

Thats very true, but without change in their arsenal at all they would stagnate in the end.

Well, their arsenal does change when old tech is rediscovered, and then once every blue moon the Mechanicus approves an alteration in order to replace something that can no longer be built. Eventually, though, they'll run out of new tech to rediscover, since more and more of it is lost forever. The end result will inevitably be stagnation.

Oooo, prrreeeeeetttyyyyyyyyy.........

Just compared it to my actual model & you actually did brilliantly. You even got the enormous side cannons in there too.

It's actually not that different from my Chapter's colours, just swap the white for black, make the top "aerials" black too & put my Chapter logo on & it's mine.

:stormtrooper:For those Star Wars fans who think a Star Destroyer could wipe the floor with one of these, here's a fact for you, a Star Destroyer is 1.6 KM long, the same size as the escorts in this pick, with guns as big as the lights. As for the Strike Cruiser, it's hard to see for someone doesn't know what to look for, but if you look at the dark patch between the top & bottom you'll be able to see the furthest back of the 4 cannons, each as big as a Star Destroyer's hanger bay...:stormtrooper::evillaugh:

Looks like they could be preparing to dish out a steaming serving of Exterminatus...

This is definitely a huge help to lore-seekers like my friends and I since GW kinda sucks at this sort of thing, like how the Fire Warrior game, although it was a crappy game, it was an amazing resource for finding out about stuff, especially the ships and structures of the Tau and Imperium.

I'd definitely like to see how you expand on all this stuff, keep kickin' butt with this fab art!

(PS- you mention 'Macross' in your sig, would that include Macross Frontier Art?)

That is just beautiful not enough words to describe the impressedness. But is it just me or does the nose of the cruiser look a little twisted?

It's entirely possible that the plastic model that I had a photo of was twisted, and that I painted that in as well. I had a reference photo for it (boring to do, but references were so lacking I just didn't know how it looked like from any other angle).

Wow

My Favourite part of Warhammer is simply imagining vast armada's crossing the treacherous seas of the warp and lying at high anchor above planets. Thank you for creating this.

Was toying about doing space scenes with painter, this planet is a good example.
Nice and fuzzy. Have you tried making ships using painter?

I always (nearly) try for realism. Not always so successful :D I don't leave any lineart in, that is simply painted over.

Btw, "you're" is short for "you are". You meant to say "your" :)

A MOUSE..haha. how horrid! No, I use a Trust 1200 design tablet. [link] - it's huge and precise. Although certain people who never used it hate it and say it's wacom or nothing.

A swedish OS.. lol.. I have Win XP home edition, Swedish language :P I firmly believe my skills are merely the sum of what I learned/practiced so far. Just get cracking, it's all experience and knowledge.
