A Warhammer 40,000 Dark Angels "Land Raider" matte painting for Sabertooth Games [link] which is an arm of the Games Workshop [link] family. It is destined to be a collectible game card in the "Horus Heresy" game.

It's finally done. It was an interesting ride painting this. I suffered through a terrible flu early on in the process, then I had some surgery (very minor, skin only :P) which was distracting. But here it is. Through the process, I was suddenly asked to change it from the initial Space Wolves to Dark Angels. Then when it was nearing completion (or so I thought) it turns out a misunderstanding made me paint the wrong type of Land Raider design. That version, a "Reinforced Armor" type, is uploaded. [link] I suppose it was fair to say the painting was no more than half done at the time. And thus I had to get back into it and redo most things. However, under some guidance from the amazing art director, the composition of the image became a lot more interesting. Ruins, rubble, Land Speeders (yes, they can actually fly more than 3 meters over the ground in some situations).

The ground and the sky incorporate parts from real photos, thus this is classified as a 'matte' painting. Everything else is completely hand painted in Photoshop 7, however. With all the repaints, it probably took upwards 16-17 hours to do. Blah eh? I want to get that number way down for future ones.

If anything, I think the angle is rather bland. So 'typical'. I'm going to try and be creative in the future.

I hope it brings you a deep sense of gothical warfare watching it.

Nerdy? :P It's Warhammer 40,000.

A cardflopper is a CGC player I presume? Do you know how large those Sabertooth Games cards are? I never quite found out..

 I don't own a single piece of Warhammer/Games Workshop or related miniatures. This piece was for the Horus Heresy cardfloppers.

Sabertooth games do several cardflopper games. [link] Maybe you'll recognize something.

I do my thing,
And you do your thing.
I am not in this world
To live up to your expectations,
And you are not in this world
To live up to mine.
You are you and I am I,
And if by chance we find
Each other, it's beautiful.

Excellent work, you really got it to mix well with the photo. The lighting and colours are really nice too. My only problem is it's rather small, because it'd make a great wallpaper if you ever decided to do that.

I'm reading the novelisation of the Dawn of War game at the moment too, so this is a pretty cool visual to have along with the images in my head as I'm reading lol.

:+fav:

Thanks for the praise :) I do also think it mixes well with the photo elements. Can't really tell that they are photographic. And yes, indeed it is small. They don't have very high resolution requirements for collectible game cards because the prints are so small to begin with. However, it works fine as a BG anyway. I have it on my own desktop (until the next achievement comes along). You can merely save it, resize it (bicubic sampling I think) and save as desktop background. Make it 800x600 or thereabout, should fit nicely.

I have never read any novels from w40k, just fluff I found online from source books and articles from the White Dwarf magazines.. it's completely addicting. Are the novels similarly good?

It's a flame, not a spark! :P It might look a bit sparkish now with the strong saturation of colours and high contrast (I raised in the last minute before submitting, it made it look sooo much better). I'm glad you are impressed by it :)
